Old Stratford Primary School Music Curriculum Rationale
Intent
Old Stratford Primary School will provide every child with a music curriculum that is inclusive, exciting, engaging and relevant. Children will gain deep rooted knowledge and understanding of music and develop a wide aprreciation of music from different genres, eras and cultures from around the world. Children will be given the opportunity to excel, explore and fulfil their creative potential and realise the musical opportunities that are open to them in the wider world.
Implementation
Children recieve one 45 minute music lesson per week lead by a specialist music teacher. All year groups are taught to play an instrument as part of their whole class music lesson for at least one term every year. Instruments will include a mixture of the guitar, ukulele, recorder, Taiko drums, djembe, brass, ocarina, hand chimes, keyboard and tunes percussion. Core skills such as reading basic staff notation and musical vocabulay are embedded through the teaching of the aforementioned key elements of music via whole class teaching, interactive learning, instrumental tuition, singing, performance, ICT and extra-curricular opportunities. Throughout the child's journey through the school, the key elemnts are explored, expanded and developed through various themes, genres and cultures, giving every child a broad understanding and appreciation of music.
Singing plays a paramount role in the overall curriculum and will be embedded throughout every topic and theme. It is essential to every child's wellbeing and social emotional development and forms an integral experience in every child's journey with Old Stratford Primary.
Singing opportunities will include singing assemblies, school choir, whole schole productions, festivals, concerts, community and significant events. Throughout their time at Old Stratford Primary, every child will be given the opportunity to express themselves and explore their voice. They will understand the importance of singing and how it can be used to communicate an array of emotions and feelings.
Every child will be given the opportunity to learn and perform an instrument. Instrumental tuition will be delivered to each class on a yearly basis. The opportunitty to perform with a Trust Instrument based ensemble will be offered to all KS2 children.
Performance is an important part of being a musician and performance opportunities will be offered to all children within their own school community, within their local community and throughout the Trust.
Impact
The impact of the curriculum is constantly monitored through formative and summative assessment opportunities. Children should leave primary school equipped with a range of skills to enable them to succeed in their secondary education and to be able to enjoy and appreciate music throughout their lives. The expected impact following the implementation of the Old Stratford curriculum is that children will:
- Be confident performers, composers and listeners and will be able to express themselves musically at the end and beyond school.
- Demonstrate and articulate an enthusiasm for music and be able to identify their own personal preferences.
- Understand ways in which music can be written down to support performing and composing activities.
- Show an appreciation and respect for a wide range of musical styles from around the world and will understand how music is influenced by the wider cultural, social, and historical contexts in which it is developed.
