Old Stratford Primary School Science Curriculum Rationale
Intent
The teaching of science at Old Stratford Primary school aims to help our children gain an awareness and understanding of their role within it. We aim to develop fun, practical and engaging high-quality curriculum, building up a body of knowledge and concepts. Pupils will be encouraged to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena that will inspire the next generation to succeed and excel in science. We encourage children to ask questions about the world by exploring in a practical way and to take part in hands on experiments.
Implementation
Science at Old Stratford Primary School is taught through a progressive curriculum, all pupils are taught essential aspects of scientific knowledge and through scientific enquiry, they will be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occuring, predict how things will behave, and draw conclusions. Topics are planned in accordance with the National Curriculum with a strong focus on developing a depth of knowledge and skills. Vocabulary is an important element of all science lessons and children are given opportunities to review and recall vocabulary linked to current and previously taught topics. Teachers will use Collins Connect to support them in creating resources tailored to the needs of each class and relevant to topics and objectives of each lesson. Children carry out regualr investigations after being given the opportunity to plan and prepare these independently and with their peers. children are encouraged to present their findings in a systematic way which reflects fair testing. Linking Science and maths activities enables children to apply their knowledge from both subjects in a meaningful way. Scientific vocabulary is displayed in the classrooms to support children in their acquisition of knowledge.
Impact
The successful approach to the teaching will result in a fun, engaging, high quality science education, that provides the children with the foundations for understanding the world around them. Children will have a love of learning and the confidence to ask questions and lead investigations to find answers.
